City Reach Prayer
Hope Chapel West
Santa Rosa CA.
Nov 4, 2005

Facilitated by: Dr. Sam Tillery and Harry Skandera

(Sam Tillery)

Opening prayer.

It says in Colossians 4:2, Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. I would like you to get into groups of three and I would like you to hold hands, so just find three and if your alone, please find a group. As you are holding hands, I want you to look at each other and say, "I need you and you need me." Remain holding hands, because we run very quickly through life don't we, and we don't stop to be thankful and to watch, but what you are watching right now, is a part of your body that may have a need. I want you to take a moment and just bless one another. If you don't know each others name, introduce yourself and just ask God to bless and speak to us tonight. The prayers don't have to go into great detail, just short prayers blessing one another. Pray a blessing for each other as you watch, listen and give thanks.

(Prayer)

(Sam Tillery)

Ok, please begin to wrap up.

What we would like you to do now is have one person break away from your group and find another group, because we want to kind of mix you up and give you a chance to be with some others that you are not with all the time. We will have our prayers spin off of this passage of scripture, Colossians 3:12, Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Pray that that would happen for one another. Clothe yourselves, like a garment, you take off one thing and put on something else. One of you in each group, grasp a hold of one of those characteristics and pray it for those in your group.

(Sam Tillery)

Father, would you begin to move in the city of Santa Rosa and throughout the cities of Sonoma County and bring freedom from the grip of unforgiveness and bitterness within families, churches, businesses, friends, co-workers and schoolmates. May we be a people that learn to bear with one another forgiving whatever grievance we may have with one another. Help us Father to forgive as you have forgiven us. Lord, you say in your word here that over all of these virtues, Father, help us to put on love which binds them all together in perfect unity. So, Lord, may we come to realize as a people how deep, broad, wide and how incredible your love is, that we are anchored in your love. Nothing can take away your love for us.

Lord, may we comprehend that in such a way that it compels us to move into the world around us, the sphere of influence that we each have and see unity come about, because we are overwhelmed by your incredible love. Father, you say to put on love. It is a act of our will, so Father would you in power and strengthen us to set into and make a choice to love, just as you have loved us. Let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. Thank you that we are members of one body and we are called by you to be at peace. Help us to be a thankful people for one another. Help us to be thankful for the diversity and differences in the body of Christ. Let the word of Christ dwell in us richly Lord, teaching us and counseling us with all wisdom with songs and hymns and spiritual songs. May we burst forth with gratitude in our hearts towards you. We give you thanks, Amen.

Welcome to City Reach Prayer. On behalf of the Pastors Prayer and Ministry Alliance we welcome you. My name is Sam and this is my good buddy and friend, Harry Skandera. We are delighted as always to be meeting. We are in our 5th year of coming every first Friday of the month and it has been rich. As I start thinking about it being five years, I guess when your having fun, time fly's, because five years is a long time to be gathering together as a body, that's got to put a smile on God's face, because that is where His heart is. We are partnering together to answer His prayer, that is to become one in our prayer, as well as in our lives, ministries and our hearts of compassion for one another. Tonight, Harry is going to come and share a little bit about a particular one that we would like to give our thanks for and express our love for.

(Harry Skandera)

Thanks Sam. It is interesting that we are into a time where the rains are beginning. It's a very sweet place here. You go into different congregations around the county and the presence of the Lord manifests Himself in a particular way, a particular flavor in each part of the body. There is a certain intimacy here, a feeling of family and a real blessing and very appropriate for tonight.

Sam mentioned that we have been doing City Reach for five years, but I think that we're pushing into our 6th year actually. Before there was City Reach and before there were a lot of things, that we have now come to take for granted in the unity in the body of Christ in Sonoma County, there were people who prayed. Some of those people we will never know. They preceded well before our lifetime, but we know that they were there.

Tonight we want to recognize and honor a particular woman who has lead the Sonoma County intercessors, Pray Santa Rosa, for many, many years. What made me think of Annette again as we are here tonight, was the coming of the rain. There is a movie staring Kirk Douglas many years ago called, Rain Maker. The point was that there are people who have faith to reach up into the heavens and stir the heart of God and things happen on earth. God says that we can all do that, but Annette was recognized, commissioned and set apart by the pastors for the express purpose of praying and gathering others to pray for the unity of the body of Sonoma County, for the pastors and for their families.

Annette, would you come up please. I want to hand this to you, but I am going to talk for just a minute. It has been a real humbling experience for my wife Carol and I to serve with Annette. We have grown so much by being with her over these few years. It seems though, in some ways, what would be more appropriate is if there would be a huge throng of people here to recognize and honor ( I know that Annette is embarrassed by all of this), but to recognize and honor what the Lord has done through her, as she represents so many.

The Lord just kind of reminded me, so much of what the intercessors do is done in private and out of sight and certainly out of the recognition of great gatherings in public, and so, how very fitting for us to be here at this place and at this time as we anticipate the coming of the rains and as we give thanks for so much that we have received, because of Annette's labors and many who have served through her. Annette, I would like you to say what you would like to say.

(Annette)

Thank you. The only thing that is on my heart is that it is so nice to be honored, but I so want all of God. For the last 8 years, it has been one of the sweetest journey's that I have ever taken. As probably most of you have discovered, you can get into a ministry and think that you are going to go forth and pour forth in something that God has called you to do, when in reality it is His big learning curve.

I don't know that I would be where I am without having been put in the place that I was put into. I was always stand offish about intercessors. Everyone I heard that was an intercessor, I wasn't. I didn't pray like them. I didn't have the passion sometimes and I just didn't do what they did.

I remember Jim Argue coming to me with the request to pray about this and my telling him that I wasn't an intercessor. I went through about three or four things and he kept saying, " It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter", and so here I am. There was a mandate from about 42 years ago, some of you are aware of this, but I have a daughter who has Cerebral Palsy and we had prayed fervently for her healing and we truly thought that God was going to heal her in this one particular instance and it didn't happen.

I cried out to God and said, "How do we pray? How do I pray for healing?" It wasn't a vision to me or anything, but In my minds eye, I know that God spoke to me as a brand new Christian and He said, "Pray for the healing of my body on earth", and in that time frame, in my minds eye, what I saw was a gaping wound with all of this puss oozing out. With this picture came the awareness that the power or help of this body is Christ, but the help was slowly ebbing out and all of the wounds were self inflicted.

I wish that I could tell you that I prayed or did what I was supposed to do for the next 30 years, but when Jim had come to me, that was the first thing that I thought about, was that we need to pray for the healing of the body and for the pastors specifically.

There are several instances and summit's that so touched my heart, seeing one end of the spectrum to another denominationally, theologically, just prostrate on the floor in worship. It's incredible. Having a pastor come and ask four of us late at night to come and pray for him, because he wasn't even sure if anyone was praying for him in his church.

There was such an openness and his posture was spread eagle, crying out for more of God! The humility that I see in pastors and the graciousness of wanting more and willing to admit it has been so sweet. My own church, watching my pastor standing in a meeting like one of these, I think I recall 10 different pastors and about 15 different churches represented and he cried out for forgiveness for our particular sector and said, "We need you", our body needed the others. I have been blessed beyond being blessed.

I have been touched by Julie being here and I haven't seen Mildred for awhile, but there has been such a sweet bond of unity between us. I have only one thing that I feel that I haven't seen that we've come into in prayer, and it's coming, and it's the last summit that I attended where we spent an hour repenting over where we had been lead to in Hebrews about the desperately wicked heart of unbelief.

We broke in that for about an hour praying and asking for God's forgiveness and then we worshiped for an hour after that. I know that move is going to come to the body of Christ here in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County. Where we have got to come into that place of repentance over our casualness, over our unbelief, because that is what it boils down to. All of our own agenda's and that will go on and on and on and the blessings are going to be magnificent, beyond anything that we have ever seen.

I know that nothing is new to all of you in that, but I am so grateful, it has been a sheer blessing. This past June, one of my concerns had been that Petaluma and Santa Rosa had not gotten together and long story short, the Petaluma group and Santa Rosa met, and I thought, " this is just so great, this is it".

I walked out of there so excited on what was going on. I got into the car and God said, " It's over", and I started a discussion, I said, " What do you mean that it's over?" He said, " It's finished, your time is over". I had a sense right away that everything was about to happen and I thought. "Well, maybe I need to stay through the transition", and He said, " No, the season is over", so I don't know what I did to Harry and Carol and Sam, but I wrote that night in a letter of recommendation that I was finished.

I've been told that they thought that I was a little abrupt. It is a new day and there are new people and the fervor is even more intense than what it was and that is great. I haven't stopped praying and I never probably will for this County and for these pastors. The greatest revelation that came to me was at one of the summit's and at the end they started to pray what I call bullet prayers. One was praying for the youth, one was praying for broken homes, one for this and that, and the prayers shot out, and I thought, "These are developers at the city gates.", and where I once taught that our elders, if I were to be sick, that I would call them to anoint me with oil, with the whole body of Christ. That's what it is and that's who we are, so bless you.

(Harry Skandera)

Your heart has been poured out for God and for His purposes in our city. Your words before His throne have been as Gold refined in the fires of intercession for God's leaders and their families. On behalf of Pastors Prayer, Sam and Harry. (clapping)

This is very important. It is said that faith grows in the soil of gratitude. As we are gathered here tonight as the body of Christ in Sonoma County, we have people here from many different congregations and cities, in that spirit, I would like you to come and express your thanks to Annette.

You don't have to say anything. If you do, you'll have to keep it short, perhaps a thank you of a hand shake or a hug, or some other short phrase, because there are quite a few of us here, but more importantly I would like you to bless Annette by touching her. If you would touch here hand or give her a high five, but if you would come and let her receive your gratitude and thanks from the body of Christ in Sonoma County.

(Sam Tillery)

Now, what this is tonight is what the passage of scripture we read earlier, we are to be thankful. We are to remember, not once someone is dead, so let's remember to do this on a regular basis to one another daily. We need it daily and this is what true community really is.

The community of the body of Christ laboring together. We need to come out of our closets and into the streets with our praise and into the courts with thanksgiving for one another and not just think it, but express it. We thank you Annette and thank you for being in prayer for us.

(Harry Skandera)

One thing we realized as we've been getting together with the city of Petaluma and began to do more with them, is that there are some things that you kind of learn as you go.

About a year and a half ago the city of Petaluma invested their intercessors as kind of a formal thing and our intercessors in Santa Rosa immediately began to say, " Where is ours", and we realized that we are kind of learning and so tonight we want to take a few moments to set apart a number of the intercessors who have been serving with pray Santa Rosa for some time and continue to do so.

We are in a very critical time and one of the things that we have learned, sometimes we stumble into some things in our ignorance, but they don't remain that way. Many years ago our daughter Hannah was running in track and she did pretty well, so we had gone to a state-wide meet. When we got there, Hannah went off to go to the warm up area with the other runners in her race. Not much later, she had come back to Carol and I with these big eyes and said, " Dad, those girls down there are mean". I said, " well, you've just gone into a different level of competition", and I say that tonight, because we want to lay hands on the intercessors that are in place, because part of what their prayer and intercession has brought us to is another level of need for intercession and prayer and also the awareness that we need to protect, cover and commission in a very specific way the people that are asking to be set apart for this critical ministry.

So Diane, will you come please. There are many here tonight, because of the occasion that has stirred in the past and we certainly really appreciate and acknowledge that we couldn't be where we are at without what you have done. What we want to do here tonight is set apart those who are praying right now and have been for a while. I am going to ask Diane if you would, call those Intercessors from Santa Rosa up and we want to lay hands on them.

(Diane)

Calling forth of those Intercessors who are present.

(Harry Skandera)

We have asked Diane to in some ways serve in the role that Annette has for these past 8 years and one of the things that we are beginning to understand a little bit better is that there are different sphere's and layers of some of the intercession that goes on. I would like the pastors who are here tonight to come up and let's see if we can get the intercessors to come gather up here and we will get behind you. Now, what we are going to do is to go down this line, one by one, and the pastors that are here are going to bless and to ask God's protection and covering on each of the intercessors by name.

(Prayer)

Father God, as we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, we stand before you now, in this place in our city and we lift these ones before you Lord. As we commission them by name, Lord we pray that your mantel for this place, your heart for this city and the cities in which they live will fall upon them in a greater way. We speak a release from their individual congregation Lord, we know that they will remain in those congregations, but in how ever much is fitting Father, we pray that they would be released unto the Church of Sonoma County. Lord, that you would give them a vision and a heart for the cities and this place.

(Prayer for Intercessors)

(Harry Skandera)

We really appreciate all of you who are here and how important it is to bear witness to this and be a part of it. Sometimes something's just must be done. California is now at what we believe to be the eleventh hour. It is significant that we would be investing our intercessors and taking the time that is needed to do what must be done.

Ezekiel 9:4, I the Lord said to him, " Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of all of those who sigh and groan over all of the abominations that are being committed in it's midst.

Joel 2:12-14, " Even now, Declares the Lord,  Return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning." Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing - grain offerings and drink offerings for the Lord your God.

It is interesting tonight, this Friday night all over this nation there are night watches. They are beginning to spring up every Friday night here, throughout the state and throughout our country. We made reference in our prayer to the cloud of witnesses, there is something a-foot, even in America. There is more prayer right now than what I have been aware of than in at least the last 40 years. It is an exciting time. It is so fitting that we be at Hope Chapel West, because everybody's eyes are on California.

Because everybody knows that the way we go is the way that the United States will go. That is a scary thought which drives us to our knees. When you think of it, give thanks to Him for those who have been set apart to intercede, but pray for them as well and join them in prayers for our city.

( Sam Tillery)

In just a moment we are going to transition and pray for Hope Chapel West and hear their vision and some of their challenges and pray into that. Before we shift though, Our heart has been as we've prayed as pastors and churches, that God would bring us together. Not just to be praying together, but in functional ministry and we are seeing that happen.

Something happens not just when you pray together, but when you begin to do ministry together, let me give you one example. For a number of years, Rob Thomerson and I as pastors prayed together with the rest of the pastors and a few years back we were kind of launched out from here and we partnered together. Each of us had a country we were laboring in, in regards to missions.

Rob was supporting some missions work in Russia and myself in Latvia, both are adjacent countries, and so we decided to travel together from two different churches and minister in the country in which each one of us had been ministering in. I have to say what an incredible blessing that was for me and an incredible testimony to those in the countries that they saw two pastors from two different churches serving together and spoke about what God was doing here. As we spoke about City Reach Prayer and uniting the body together.

As I was reflecting on Rob and his wife Donna who believe that the Lord is calling them to the mission field in Russia and they leave and are appointed on the 15th of this month and will be leaving us. I would like us to pray for Rob tonight. I want to put it in the context that for me, it hit me that I am excited for what God is calling them to, but I feel a loss, so I get this dual thing going on. That loss comes from a relationship in prayer and a relationship in physically laboring in various ministry projects together and then traveling to countries from which we both individually.

Independent of one another, began to love and have a heart for. I would love to tell you some about those countries, but the point for right now is that they are about relationship. I am only just illustrating personally what is happening in this county that started way back with intercessors praying for healing for pastors and against the independence that we had lived in and that we would see that we are inter-dependent.

Our desire is to continue to labor together in the future together, even though you may be a thousand miles east of Moscow and we will see each other on missions. We are planning to be a part of what he is doing there, not only in our prayers, but physically going. I am going to ask Rob to come on up and I want us to pray for him as he moves forth as one of us. It's not like he is leaving us, he is just now our Sonoma County missionary to Russia. Do you want to say something before we pray?

(Rob)

I just want to make it clear that we are only being appointed on November 15th, not leaving, so we will be here for one more City Reach Prayer. I want you to know that, because we are going as Southern Baptist missionaries, denominational missionaries, but I want you to know that one of our assignments has been to go and initiate prayer in the city. We really do see ourselves going to cover various different levels. One of the key levels we are going to do is to do what God has already sown into this city of three million people in Russia. By the way, we are going as your missionaries, not just Southern Baptist missionaries. We are going to continue to sow into that city what you have already sown into it and it is the highest honor and privilege to represent you and go there in your behalf.

(Prayer for Rob and Donna)

(Sam Tillery)

For years, part of my heart has been to not only see that we unite locally, but we carry it into all of the spheres of our ministries and missions is a part of that. For about 7 years we have been taking folks into Latvia from Sonoma County, probably about 15 different churches and ministries that participated.

The purpose in that is to bring unity and a greater synergy in power and influence when we unite in an area, a local area that we can come together, so certainly the heart is that that would spread into many other things and areas for which others have a heart for and can be in that. I want to invite you, not as a personal invitation from one church, but for the purpose of unity in missions.

Many of you have expressed a desire to go to Latvia and are not able to, well we have 6 Latvians coming on the 15th and I would like to introduce you to them. I will pass out this little flier and it's a dessert and we would like you to come and meet them and hear from them. The President of Bridge Builders International in Latvia, a former member of parliament and director of human rights, has come to Christ and has a strong testimony and will speak about the unity.

One of my prayers is that God will also use that to connect with our Mayor, that this city will adopt the city in Latvia. A partnership because we have a spiritual partnership. Now let's draw the city into understanding these things, so we have invited the mayor and we'll see if she comes. I want to open an invitation to you to catch more of the heart of what Latvia is about.

The fact that we have been connected in an endeavoring to unite together, so it's an evening with a nice dessert, so if you want to kind of dress up a little bit and bring friend that would be great. Thomas Kincade, the famous painter of light is a supporter of Latvia and the work there. He has painted 5 paintings of Latvia and has given us permission and we'll be bringing them and they will be on display at Foothills that night. So if you want them and if you would like to purchase them you can do that as well. One hundred thousand dollars each, but the proceeds go to the ministry in Latvia. We also want to invite you to the next trip to Israel on May 2 2006.

A great relationship begins to develop as you travel together and minister together and hear from the Lord together and we want to open that up to you, but there is only room for 45 people.  So we can fit into one bus, myself, Rosemary Schindler, Miles and Catherine Weiss, and the blessing is that Pastor Ben, a Native American from Round Valley will be traveling with us as well. So if you are interested go ahead and just e-mail me and I will give you the details. Russ, would you come and share with us your heart for this ministry. Give us some bullet points as to how we can pray and maybe some challenges so that we can see God break those things.

(Pastor Russ)

First off, my wife and I are very humble that you would come to our house. This is God's house, but He has asked us to watch over it and we are thankful that you are here. There are some treats on the tables out there, so stick around and enjoy fellowship with one another.

The church is nearing it's fifth anniversary of being planted on this side of town. It was July of last year that God had put a burden on Terry and my heart that we should step into pastoring this church and it has been a roller coaster ever since. We have seen the sweetness of serving and the bitterness of serving.

Terry and I are committed to making certain that the reason that God planted this church was so that the people on the West side of town could hear the Lord. They could hear the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and let them know that He loves them. He's not angry with them and that He has a home for them. Our vision has always been and I am a former youth pastor. I love kids which is a transition that someday I will share with you my background, we have two grown kids. But we look at the fact that the youth that the Lord has allowed us to touch and bless, are our additional kids.

Our burden in this church is that families would be saved. We have a lot of lost kids out there, dysfunctional homes, no homes. What you would consider to be a normal home are lost. Society is lying to them and this world is stealing them one by one and I am not willing that any should parish. I believe that someone else said that.

Our prayer is that the youth and families of Sonoma County would come to see Hope Chapel West as their home. That would be one of the things we would like to pray about. We have been blessed and challenged with this beautiful building. We have been here nearly our entire life. We came here 6 months after we planted the church and again it has been both a blessing and a curse, if you will forgive me for saying so. It's a wonderful large building, it's a wonderful large rent and we are feeling called by the Lord that we are to leave. But we do not know where. He has not revealed to us where we are to go. He has very specifically spoken to us at one time that this was our home. That this is where He wanted to grow Hope Chapel West and start it's root. That vision has began change and we don't know where that leaves us.

So that leads me to the second point that we can pray into that. Yes, this is the church that He had given us, but church as usual is not working. Something has got to be different. We are the third church that has been in this building and they haven't left because they grew too big for this building. So perhaps there is a spiritual measure that has to be prayed out as well.

Finally, I would like to pray that we the body would have the strength to get out of our seat. We didn't get called to fellowship with one another alone. We got called to fellowship with them, that it is not this house that we get called to fellowship. So I would just pray for the strength for us, our body to feel led to step out those doors.

I think that there is a great deal of fear in what is involved in going out and calling on people and calling their name and letting them know that Jesus loves them, so those would be the bullet points. For Terry and I, just for strength. I am bi-vocational and my time is as limited as you can imagine. I have got a wonderful team, in fact most of my team is here supporting me and holding me up and carrying me. So I have been praying just for unity between Terry and I and what God would have for us. We have an adult child and one left in high school and we pray for their protection as well.

If I could be selfish on this last point, our son 3 years ago was diagnosed with a very serious disease and we believe that God is healing him. He is now only on 1/3 of the medication that he started on two years ago, almost 3, and he has had no further sign of symptoms and no increase of symptoms. So we believe that the hand of God is moving on our son Nick. This coming Thursday on Dec.10th at 8:00 a.m., he will have a medical procedure that will reveal to the doctors exactly what is happening to his heart. And just how much we believe he is improving will be know by the doctors, so on a selfish level, I pray for complete healing. I also would love to share the joy with a Jewish doctor who doesn't believe what I believe. I want that day when he comes out saying, "I can't believe what I just saw", that's what we want, so thank you.

(Harry Skandera)

Would everyone who is here from Hope Chapel please stand up. Ok, this might require some math ability. We want to split each one of these folks up into a small prayer group. Ok, so we have our four points of prayer.

Now, make sure that you pray in such a way that everybody gets some air time, not just one person. I know that the Holy Spirit will help you with that. In a city such as ours, which part of it's spiritual DNA and diversity, one of the things that I believe that the Lord is saying that fits in with your mission statement, to get out there, is that your rent is out there. We told our daughters, one is married and the other two are still waiting, and I told that as they keep seeking the purposes of God, that he (a husband) will be there.

Sometimes we can get distracted by our need, when we just need to keep pursuing the destiny that God, because it's on the road ahead. The fact that this church is struggling with rent and relocating is something that has happened in so many churches and you know, we are standing with you.

(Prayer )

I know that this ceremony went a little long tonight, but it was so necessary. If we had to take 5 hours, we are doing something that needs to be done and actually there is scripture that speaks to the fact. That if you receive a prophet as a prophet, then you receive a prophet's reward.

When we receive the intercessors as intercessors as we have tonight in each group, this was a heavy intercessors night, we all receive the blessing of that, so we are going to close with a song.

Just a couple of reminders, if you wish to give an offering to Pastor's Prayer and Ministry Alliance, that's who you make the check out to and Sam's got something for you to put that check in or he'll find something.

Sam and I are you know... We never remember to take an offering for City Reach, so we're always getting in a little bit of trouble (ha, ha, ha). The other thing, this Latvia reception isn't Sam's deal, this is something that the Lord has put on many hearts. I work at Santa Rosa Christian School and we have two Latvian exchange students at our school this year as a result of our trip there. We will be going again this next summer, but I just want to encourage you that, you may never go to Latvia. But you ought to touch this people and the Russians that were there as well, so thank you for coming and make sure to check the website, each month churchofsonomacounty.org/ to find out where the next City Reach Prayer meeting will be held and may God richly bless you.
