Whereas, about 10 years ago, Foothill Church started a program that promoted and encouraged volunteers to give back to their community. This event became known as Spring Clean. Three years ago about 180 citizens volunteered and participated in cleaning areas of our community. Last year about 350 participated in work projects in our city; and on April 29, 2006, over 1,100 volunteers signed up from local churches in our community, and with additional individuals participated in Spring Clean 2006; and

Whereas, volunteers joined over 100 City and County staff working on projects clearing brush, cleaning creeks, cleaning up neighborhoods, graffiti removal, trail clearing, chipping and spreading brush in our community, including: Spring Lake (Jack Rabbit Camp site and Fisherman Trail), Howarth Park (Sullivan Ridge, Medica Ridge, Eagle Scout Trail, Train Station and interior site work), Kenton Court, Chanate Cemetery, Santa Rosa Creeks, Ragle Park, railroad tracks, Los Guilicos and other locations. Working together strengthens our community image and sense of place through the preservation and restoration of our community assets; and

Whereas, 2,000 cubic yards of brush was chipped and spread along Sullivan and Medica Ridges; 300 cubic yards of debris brush vines and other trash was collected; 15 acres of Howarth Park cleared of litter, with another ½ acre pruned and cleaned; 17.3 miles of creek were cleared of litter and debris, 2.7 miles of railroad tracks were cleared of litter, 250 cubic yards of bark chips were spread at Howarth Park; 40 cubic yards of shale rock were spread at Spring Lake with three (3) picnic areas rocked; 20 cubic yards of wood was removed from Chanate Cemetary and recycled into 200 bundles of split wood; 300 lineal feet of fence was primed and painted at Ragle Park; 3,000 square feet of landscaping at Los Guilicos completed; 1,000 feet of Fisherman’s Trail (Spring Lake) was cleared; 500 square feet of shrubs were removed at Los Guilicos; 300 square feet of berries were removed from Stanley Cemetery (Franklin Cemetery); 40 gallons of paint were used to remove graffiti, and other work was completed during Spring Clean 2006.

Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved, that, I Jane, Bender, Mayor of the City of Santa Rosa, in appreciation of all the citizen volunteers, with City and County Staff, who participated in working together to make our community better, do hereby proclaim April 29th, 2006, as

in the City of Santa Rosa.
